About Izmir

With a population of approximately 3.6 million, Izmir is Turkey’s 3rd most populous city. It is an important port and industrial base as well as a popular touristic destination with districts such as Çeşme, Selçuk and Foça. The city also hosts the Izmir International Fair, one of the most established in Turkey.

Izmir has a temperate climate characterized by hot and dry summers, and mild and rainy winters. There is a subway network that connects the airport to some parts of the town. The subway line starts from Aliağa, runs through the Airport, and extends all the way to Torbalı. The towns of Çeşme and Alaçatı enjoy increased popularity owing to the newly built Çeşme motorway. Alaçatı also hosts international surfing events and competitions.

Major attractions in the Izmir city center include the Clock Tower, Asansör (the cliff-face elevator), Kordon (the Waterfront Promenade), and Kültür Park (the inner city park). For the history enthusiast, the city boasts an important cultural heritage with highlights such as the Ancient City of Ephesus and the House of the Virgin Mary near the village of Selçuk.
