About Acapulco

Acapulco is a Mexican city located on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. It is part of the state of Guerrero and is the largest coastal city in the country. The official name is Acapulco de Juarez. While in colonial times the city was famous for its port and harbour, today it has become synonymous with luxury and ultra-luxury resorts. Acapulco has the oldest and most established seaside resort in the country. Its popularity began to increase after the 1950s and became a favorite vacation spot of many Hollywood stars. In addition to tourism, the city's economy also benefits from cotton, coffee and sugar exports.

Unfortunately, recent drug wars, fueled by rival drug cartels, has hurt both the security situation as well as international reputation of Acapulco. However, both the local and federal governments have taken steps to correct this in the last few years. The city is divided into the old city, which is dominated by traditional architecture, and the new city, which sprawls out along the coastline and consists of luxury high-rise hotel and condos.

La Quebrada is popular with both the youth of the city as well as adventure seekers who like to jump into the sea in a rather dangerous fashion. La Costera is what locals call the 11-kilometer coastal strip of popular beaches, including Icacos, Hornos, the Papagayo and Playa Tamarindos.
