Amritsar, the capital and cultural center of the Punjab state in India's northern region, was founded in 1577 by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Guru of the Sikhs. This city, which remains a significant religious center for Sikhs, is also home to the Golden Temple, their most important pilgrimage site. The Golden Temple, revered as one of India's holiest and most beautiful shrines, attracts many visitors, both Sikhs and tourists from around the country and the world.
Situated in the northern part of India, Amritsar is a border city located just 50 kilometers away from the Pakistan border. With a population of over one million, it serves as the largest city in the Punjab state. Due to its strategic location at the crossroads of road and rail networks connecting New Delhi with other parts of the country, Amritsar remains bustling throughout the year.
Amritsar stands out among Indian cities for preserving an authentic and mystical atmosphere. It features labyrinthine streets reflecting classic Indian architecture, historic houses renowned for their captivating wooden craftsmanship, and bustling spice-scented street markets. Notable places to visit in Amritsar include the Khalsa College, a masterpiece by architect Ram Singh, Jallianwala Bagh Garden, the site of the 1919 Amritsar massacre, the grand Gobindgarh Fort opened to the public in 2017, the Partition Museum narrating India's division and historical migration, the Mata Temple dedicated to the revered Lal Devi, the intricate Durgiana Temple showcasing remarkable architecture, and the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Summer Palace.
