About Gavle

Gavle is a port city located in the south of Sweden. The city’s name means ‘river banks’ and is famous for its colorful wooden houses. The city showed rapid development after the 16th century because of its status as a port city. However a tragic fire burned down almost all the houses in 1776. But afterwards the city entered into a period of rapid recovery. Today the city is again filled with intriguing vibrant wooden houses. Gavle is famous for its Yule Goat and the large statue of the goat.

The weather is cold year-round. In the winter the temperature falls below 0 and the city receives snowfall. In the summer the temperatures don’t go any higher than 20 degrees Celsius. Days are long and bright in the summer while days are long and dark in the winter. Therefore the best time to visit would be during the summer months. The city has a developed industry. Copper and iron mines are significant sources of livelihood in the city. Main attractions to visit in the city include the National Railway Museum, Old Town, Limon Island, Concert Hall, and Mackmyra Svensk Whisky, where you can enjoy whiskey tasting.
