Minami Torishima, also known as Marcus Island, is a small Japanese island town. The island of 1.5 square kilometers in the shape of a triangle lies about two thousand kilometers away from the mainland territory. The nearest island is about a thousand and three hundred kilometers away. Minami Torishima has a military airport which is also known by the same name (some resources refer to the airport as Marcus Island Airport). It is not possible to reach the satellite images of the airport used by the Japanese Naval Defense Forces even on the internet, for security reasons. There is also an air observation base and radio station on the island.

Minami Torishima actually a coral island in the Pacific Ocean and its name means 'Southern Bird Island'. The island was first discovered in 1694 by the Spanish marines and was annexed by Japan in 1898. The island, which was used as a military base by Japan during the Second World War, was conquered by the United States for a period of time, but since 1968 it has again been under Japan's rule and is still being used as a military base. Minami Torishima does not have civilian life or private businesses.

Minami Torishima is the city with the hottest climate in Japan. Temperatures in the city which is never cold are measured around 25 degrees Celsius throughout the year and it receive precipitation all year.
