About Yuzhno Sakhalinsk
Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is a city in Sakhalin Oblast of the Sakhalin Island located in the east of Russia. This city is in the north of Japan. The settlement which is located on the Susuya River is in the southeast of the Sakhalin Island. The city was founded as a small settlement in 1882 with the name Vladimirovka. According to the Treaty of Portsmouth signed after the Russo-Japanese War occurred between 1904-1905, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk whose name was Vladimirovka in those years came under the domination of the Empire of Japan and the name of the city was changed as Toyohara.
After the Second World War, the island was occupied by the Soviet Union, and Toyohara joined the Soviet territories with the name 'Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk'. The settlement has been continuing its existence since 1946 with the status of 'district'. Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, which has a rich location in terms of petroleum and natural gas reserves, witnesses the oil investments of many domestic and foreign companies. The headquarters of the largest energy companies in the Russian Far East are located in this city. The economic growth of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk depends entirely on the production of oil and oil products.
Buildings dating back to the Empire of Japan today continue their existence as museums. The most important of these is the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Museum.
