Located in Zaporizha Oblast in southern Ukraine, Berdiansk is located on the northern coast of the Azov Sea. The city, which has a population of about 116 thousand people according to 2013 data, is known as the port and industry city of Ukraine. Also known with mud baths and climatic treatments, the city is home to health facilities.

Berdiansk, situated on the steppe area with plenty of vegetal and animal diversity, has more than 300 species of plants. There are various mammals, birds, insects and reptiles, wild rabbits, hedgehogs, weasels, foxes, weasels and steppe cats in the region.
